Galápagos cruise, part 1

We just arrived in Puerto Ayora, which is the halfway point of our cruise. Because we’re in civilisation again for a short while, just a quick update on what we’ve seen and done this week. When we last wrote, we were in San Cristóbal. At noon we were picked up from the harbour and taken to what was going to be our home for the next week. Our ship is called “The king of the sea” and it fits 12 passengers. We’ve been on board with 12 people from various places (New Zealand, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Aruba). Day 1 After … Continue reading Galápagos cruise, part 1

Awesome people

Allow me to introduce some of the people we met along the way. Anna and Andreas (from Finland and Germany, respectively) we met in Baños and we travelled to Cuenca together. Altogether we travelled about a week with Anna and Andreas – many funzies! They’re travelling around the world for a year, which is just amazing! You can follow their blog here: http://ourultimatejourney.com/ Also, this is Kelley, whom we also met in Baños for a moment while we were stuffing our faces with pizza, but who randomly met us in the harbour of  San Cristobal and was kind enough to … Continue reading Awesome people

Welcome to the jungle!

Good morrow, everybody! So, when we last posted we were heading towards Misahuallí for a jungle adventure. After an eight-hour journey we arrived at the lodge, which is situated more or less on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, quite close to “civilisation”, i.e. farms and villages. The lodge itself was very fancy and we were well taken care of. Meals were all included and we had our own little bungalow close to the main dining area, with plenty of mosquito nets. During the day we did various activities such as: Trekking into the jungle. We were made hats out … Continue reading Welcome to the jungle!

Baños de Agua Santa

The day after the Quilotoa, we were planning to go to Baños. This included a bus trip from Chugchilan to Latacunga and from there to Ambato and from there to Baños. Baños is a town with pleasantly warm and quite humid weather and may be one of the more touristy places in Ecuador due to its many opportunities for adventurous activities. We were told it would rain all the time, but when we got there it was very sunny. We spent the afternoon walking around town and reserved some bicycles for the day after. The day after that the weather … Continue reading Baños de Agua Santa

Quilotoa

The day after our rendez-vouz with altitude sickness, we decided to take it really easy but the next day the game was on! In the morning of June the 26th, we, and 6 others took a camioneta to the Quilotoa volcano top at 3890m above sea level. Talk about windy. And thus cold. Our plan was to see how the weather was and how we felt and decide to take a taxi back or walk back. After a successful purchase of 1x poncho, the game was on.  We hiked a quarter around the Quilotoa lagoon, on the edge of the … Continue reading Quilotoa

Mountains, Gandalf!

Yesterday morning we left Quito in search of less populous areas. This involved our first experience with the Ecuadorian bus system, and before we move on to where we are right now, a few things we found remarkable about the buses in Ecuador (disclaimer: biased!). To start with: the buses were modern, safe, and comfortable. This was strange to me because of some blogs I’d read about how dangerous riding a bus in Ecuador could be in terms of robbery (e.g. bags being cut or stolen). For some reason this led me to expect a rickety old bus full of … Continue reading Mountains, Gandalf!
